This automated model illustrates a Spud Pontoon 200ft long by 60ft wide, weighing 1100 tons. The pontoons were anchored by their four legs or ’spuds’. The pontoon was raised or lowered by an electric motor at each leg to conform to the tide. The pontoons were used to form pierheads, several being connected end to end with concrete intermediate pontoons in between.
