Gibraltar Model 1781

Model of Gibraltar
1:1200 Scale
John Byres
1781 (refurbished in 1985 by Cpl. M. E. Osbourn)

Over two hundred years old, this model of the Rock of Gibraltar is made of plaster on a wooden base. The area showing sea was originally mirrored, but has since been painted blue. A brass plaque on the model explains how it was commissioned in 1781 to “represent the figure of the situation of the Peninsula Fortifications and City of Gibraltar and also the new Additional Works as they stood in 1779 with the Spanish Forts and Lines across the Isthmus.”
