Bailey Suspension Bridge at Pegu

The so-called Messervy Bridge at Pegu was built between August and September 1945. This was a 320 foot Bailey suspension bridge, completed by 424 Field Coy IE who had never erected a bridge of this type before. It was planned initially to improve the land communications between Rangoon and forward elements of 4 Corps facing the Japanese across the lower Sittang river, and replaced a pontoon Bailey bridge washed away during the monsoon. However the war eneded before the bridge could be built, though its construction was important to the general post-war restoration of the area’s infrastructure.
