The idea for the Bailey bridge was developed in 1940 by Donald Bailey as a system for constructing bridges using series of interconnecting panels. Variations of the number of trusses, storeys and transoms per bay gave great flexability of construction from single storey class 9 to triple storey class 70 bridges. The longest Bailey bridge built was a pontoon bridge at Xanten with a total length of 1,940 ft.
