Where a float might rest on rough ground at low tide, the Beetle was fitted with four spud legs to hold it clear of the sea bed with a simple hand-wheel locking device. These were used at the inshore ends of the piers. Sharp rocks were dressed off by the compressor tools and a bed of sandbags on which the Beetle grounded.
