An important part of Chatham Historic Dockyard’s current bid for recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is the proposed conversion of it’s 19th century Number One Smithery building to house and store more than 5,000 maritime objects and artefacts from collections at the National Maritime Museum, the Imperial War Museum and the Science Museum. An important part of this collection will be over 4 thousand model ships, including a model of the St. Michael warship from the 1660s, the earliest positively identified model ship in existence.
